Figure Drawing

Classes at WMA are over and summer has (almost) begun. I will have a lot of free time and plan on spending it soaking up the sun, relaxing, and creating artwork. I have a few comissions lined up and I also have a few plans for drawings and paintings. Since 2009, there has been a bit of a creative lull in my life, but, I have been drawing again and it feels great!

I recently joined a figure drawing group at an old mill studio building down the road.
The first week, the model didn't show up, so we spent the three hours drawing each other. It seemed like a good idea, but you'd be surprised how much clothes change the experience. Instead of paying attention to proportion and form, a lot of time is spent on the folds of the fabric. The poses ranged from 5 to 20 minutes... we sparatically jumped back and forth with times but should have started with some one minute warm ups.

Yesterday, the model did show up! We started with one minute poses, did a few 10 minute ones and then worked our way up to a 30 minute pose. Wow, what a difference to draw from this model!

Grade Six is almost finished with their mosaics. Tuesday is their last day before summer vacation!
For this project, we were inspired by the Romans' use of mosaics and before we got started, we discussed lines of symmetry and radial symmetry.

An ancient technique (Used by the Greeks) in which designs are craved out of a layer of underglaze or slip to reveal the clay underneath. For this one, holly added clear glaze on top to add some shine.

Look at this gem I found in the kiln today!

Linoleum Block Prints

These were not done in a traditional way using a breyer. The student painted the ink on in select areas and then printed it one time: a mono print.

Last week

This is the last week (today and Friday!) for seniors to work in the studio. Aside from glazing, this is the last time he might ever create on the wheel or with ceramics. *sniffle sniffle*

Art Show!

Here is just one wall of the Middle School Art show. These are creations from Grade Six that were inspired by Ancient Egyptian cartouches, sarcophagi and Ancient Greek temples and architecture. They've had a busy year!
